Nature Walk – Botanic Garden cum Singapore Quarry

On 23 May 2010, a beautiful Sunday morning, 71 enthusiatics CTSS students and their families gathered at the carpark near the school for our first nature walk of this year.  At 7.45am sharp, two buses brought us to the Singapore Botanical Garden, our first destination.

Our friendly guide, Peter, guided us through a very educational walk.  We were introduced to huge Heritage trees, the ornamental Sealing-wax palm trees, the Torch Ginger which is used as one of the  ingredients in our local dish Rojak,  We walked past Swan Lake filled with water Lilies and learned about many more interesting plants.

At 9.45am, we said goodbye to the Botanic Garden and headed to our next destination, the Dairy Farm Nature Park.

Upon arrival to the Dairy Farm Nature Park, we took a 20-minute walk to the Singapore Quarry.  Along the path, Peter pointed out many fruit trees: Durian tree, Jackfruit tree etc.  Peter also showed us herbs that have medicinal properties as well as pointed out some poisonous plants. That was an eye-opener to many of us, because to us, these plants looked just like any other ordinary plants.

Along the way, Peter spotted an Iguana. Everyone quickly took out their cameras to snap photos of it.

When we finally arrived at the Singapore Quarry, we were amazed by its  tranquil setting and scenic view.  This is a wetland which has many water plants and also different species of Dragonfly.

Before we depart Singapore Quarry, our CTSS Parent Support Group Chairman, Josephine Goh, presented Peter with a token of appreciation.  We are grateful to Peter for teaching us on the wide variety of flora and fauna in our Nature Parks!

At 11.45am, we bid farewell to one another.

This is truly a great learning experience for all of us, both students and faimily members.  Most important of all, it is FUN spending time with family and friends.  We certainly look forward to the next nature walk!!
